Evaluated on its own merits, the Australian-made 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP is a dream come true for driving enthusiasts who need four doors. Rear-wheel drive? Check. Corvette-derived LS3 V8 power and a sport-tuned suspension? Oh, you betcha. The 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 that pumps out 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. Put simply, the Corvette-sourced LS3 V8 is a beast. It rumbles menacingly at idle, impatiently shaking the car from side to side. With an impressive 0-60-mph sprint of 5.2 seconds en route to a sizzling 13.4-second quarter-mile at 105.9 mph.

All in all, mighty impressive? It is still outgunned by the Audi RS4. A key rival with also a 400bhp plus V8, same goes for the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG which also happens to have a 6.2 litre V8 engine under the hood. The hefty wheight, tall gearing ratios, lack of finesse in the chassis and crude build quality in general makes this a very likeable car, but also a bit ancient. There is a spiritual rival, the 2015 Chevrolet SS, which is a great machine in its own right, but massivelly toppled by other fast saloons. So, the G8 is brimming with character, mainly because of it's flaws, not it's strength. Would I buy one? Oh, yes. A fast Lexus, Audi, Volvo or BMW might be a safer bet, but also very boring. The G8 GXP is anything but...
